Five Important Things People Forget when Planning a Move

Planning out your move is something that will take plenty of time and organization. There are tons of aspects that will have to be covered, and problems can crop up at any time. That is why it is so important that you do research and know what you are doing so that you do not forget any of the vital parts of the process. You could forget many different things, but there are five specific steps that many people often forget when they are moving. Here are those five things; if you know about something, you are more equipped to handle it.

  1. Not Researching the Movers: Perhaps the biggest mistake that people make when they are getting ready for a move is not researching the movers well enough to avoid scams and other problems. The tools for research are out there, but some people are in a rush to find a moving company to handle their move. As such, these people simply choose from one of a couple companies, and they rarely go so far as to request a binding quote. This can only lead to trouble, including one of the many moving scams that are out there today. If you want to protect yourself, then you need to make sure to research movers thoroughly.
  2. Paying for Free Resources: Moving is an expensive venture, that is for sure, but there are plenty of areas where you can cut costs. Many people make the mistake of paying for resources that would otherwise be free such as boxes and moving supplies. If cutting costs is important to you and your move, then you should always look for areas of the moving process where you can save money. The biggest two areas include choosing a moving method that you don’t have to pay a whole lot for, such as moving yourself, or reusing moving supplies to pack your things.
  3. Forgetting to Label Every Box: Many people don’t label boxes when they are moving, which can be a real problem for some moves. If your home is especially large, then you really need to come up with some kind of inventory system. Labeling your boxes is an important step in the process, as it allows you to get somewhat organized for your move. It also makes the unpacking process that much easier, as you will know just what is in every box. No matter how far you are moving, make sure that you label everything along the way.
  4. Failing to Put in a Change of Address: If you don’t change your address with the postal service, then you can’t expect your mail to be forwarded to your new home. A change of address kit also includes small postcards that you can mail to magazine companies and other companies to let them know that you have moved. This will help you get established in your new home and still get all of the monthly subscriptions that you have. While some magazines will be forwarded to your new home for a while, the post office only offers this service for a couple of months. Be sure to put in this change of address as soon as you can after moving.
  5. Purchasing Less than Enough Insurance: Anyone who is moving needs to have insurance to cover the loss or damage of the things that they are moving. There are different types of insurance out there, and many moving companies offer some level of insurance without the consumer having to pay extra, but it is rarely enough. Make sure that you consider all of the things that you are moving and purchase insurance so that everything is covered along the way. Remember, movers often insure things by the pound, while insurance companies insure things in a more traditional manner. No matter where you are moving, make sure that you keep this in mind.

A residential move is a very complex task that requires you to plan ahead. Remember these simple blunders so that you can avoid them when you are planning out your own move. In the end, knowing what to avoid will give you the power to make your move simple and stress free.
