• Indiana is known for hosting the very first long distance auto race in 1911. The prize at the time was only fourteen thousand dollars, which the winner obtained by driving only 75 miles an hour. Today, this race is known as the Indianapolis 500.
• The well known explorers, Lewis and Clark, started their journey into the Northwest Territory from Fort Vincennes, a small town in Indiana.
• Now a museum, the Montgomery County Jail is the only working rotary jail in the country. It is now located in Crawfordsville.
• The name of the state means, literally, land of the Indians. Only about eight thousand Native Americans live there today.
• Before the original pioneers arrived in the state of Indiana, over 80% of the state was covered in forest. Today, only 17% of the state is considered to be covered with forests.
