Moving and Storage Tips for Families Using Temporary Housing

Boxes DeliveryMoving to a new home isn’t always as cut and dry as you might think. Sometimes, you find that you and your family cannot move into your new home right away, leaving you to find some kind of storage for your things and temporary housing for your family. It can be confusing to set up temporary housing while you are moving and trying to figure out where you will end up after everything is said and done. Thus, it is important to know the differences between the options that you do have at this point in time. Keep these things in mind so that you can make the right choice when you need a place to be in the interim.

  • A Hotel – Regular hotels are great for families that are both small and who only need a place to be for a couple of days. If your transition is going to take long than that, then you need to think about choosing a different option. Even though hotels can give discounts for longer stays, they are often not enough to make the stay worth it.
  • Extended Stay Hotels – As the name implies, extended stay hotels are priced and set up for people who are going to be staying for a longer period of time. The rooms that these hotels offer are fully furnished and most of them come with small kitchen areas so that you can cook your own food rather than eating out all the time. These hotels usually offer weekly or even monthly pricing, so compare the costs and see how much you can save.
  • Short Term Rentals – If you are building a home, or you simply need a couple of months to get set up before you can move into your final destination, then consider opting for a short term rental instead of a hotel of any kind. These rentals can be fully furnished or empty, and they usually come with contracts that can span anywhere from a month to six months. As such, you won’t have to worry about breaking a lease when you do actually move.
  • Business Rentals – Much like extended stay hotels, these rentals offer a fully furnished area to call home for a short period of time. Most of the time these rentals run a bit higher than other options because all of the utilities are included. From electricity to high speed internet, a business rental is the perfect choice if you need all of these amenities over a longer period of time. If your employer is a preferred employer, you may even be able to obtain a discount on the regular rates, so be sure to ask about any specials that may be offered.
  • Climate Controlled Storage – Like finding the perfect temporary home for your family, you will have to find a temporary place for all of your things. Storage places exist all over the country, but it is a good idea to plan ahead if you know that you are going to need storage of some type. Climate controlled buildings offer the benefit of a cool area to store anything that you own, rather than leaving it to the mercy of the elements. Consider carefully if you will need climate control, as they are often more expensive and a bit rarer than their bulk cousins.
  • Bulk Storage Bins – Bulk storage bins are also located around the country, but since they are easier to maintain, there are more of them available. If you are only going to need storage for a short period of time, or if you don’t have anything that the temperature might damage, then you can save money on the moving process by opting for this kind of storage.

As you can see, moving is not always as simple as loading things into a truck and then unloading them at your final destination. Sometimes, there are stops that happen along the way. If you find that you need some kind of storage or temporary housing, consider these tips to make the process just a little bit easier. In the end, it will be well worth the time and effort that you spend organizing.

Plan your move ahead of your time, ask for moving quotes and prepare yourself financially for a relocation project.
